Blogging IT...
Hello. My name is Malachi Voorhies and I am the Director of IT Services here at FGI. I will be a regular contributor to our blog, and will be speaking mostly from a technical aspect. However, I may make posts on any number of topics, with the intent of connecting that post to something of a more technical nature.
So, a little about me… I spent 10 years in service to this great nation in the US Air Force as a Russian Linguist (AFSC 208, for those wondering). As a Russian linguist I dealt with a lot of different technology, and really fell in love with it all. For instance, I worked on a Sun Sparc-20 workstation on a fiber-optic token ring network at one of the locations I was stationed. I worked with people from all 4 main branches of service (sorry Coasties, we didn’t have any of you there), as well as service members from allied nations. There were several great guys stationed there from the UK, as well as a few Canadian army members serving there. We were in constant contact via highly encrypted satellite transmission to a couple of sister sites in the UK and Australia, in near real-time. In the mid-90s, this was some truly incredible technology!
At any rate, while in the service, I taught myself as much as I could about computers in general, with some emphasis on web design. When I got out of the service, I was lucky enough to land a job as an IT Technician at a telephony company in the Seattle area. I have had quite a few other jobs in the tech sector since then and am truly enjoying this career. I really enjoy what I do for FGI and our clientele!
In my next post, I’ll introduce and explain some of the terms I will likely make frequent reference to in my posts. Until then, I will say enjoy this swiftly approaching holiday season!
